Maine Celebrates the ADA at 20

Founded in 2009 and led by Alpha One, Center for Independent Living, the Maine ADA Coalition is a collective group of non-profit organizations involved in disability related services working together to create new opportunities for people with disabilities in Maine where existing programs, services, or information delivery are lacking and not adequately serving the needs of the disability community.
Currently, Coalition partner organizations include the original four founding member organizations of Husson University, Bangor, VSA Arts Maine, Brunswick, The TEC Center of Bangor, Alpha One of South Portland and Bangor, and other member organizations including the Maine Transition Network of Bangor, the Center for Community Inclusion, Orono, the State of Maine Bureau of Rehabilitation Services, Augusta, Southern Maine Community College, South Portland, and the Tri-County Career Center in Bangor.
In honor and celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act by President George Herbert Walker Bush on July 26th, 1990, the Maine ADA Coalition has initiated an Awards Program to recognize individuals or organizations that have substantially contributed to the implementation of the ADA regulations while championing and advocating for the disability community.
- Awards Program Description:
- Three (3) to five (5) awards will be presented to individuals or organizations that have shown exemplary dedication to advancing the intent and goals of the ADA.
- Nominations for ADA Awards can be submitted by any active disability related organization that wishes to recognize a worthy candidate.
- The deadline for submitting nominations will be July 15th, 2010.
- Nominations will be judged and winners selected by three (3) independent reputable judges.
- Awards presentations will be made on July 26th, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Husson University Gracie Theatre.
- Categories:
- Accessibility - Innovative Universal Design or Exemplary Barrier-Removal
- Public Programs - Model Compliance Effort by State or Municipal Agency (or other government entity)
- Public Service – Model or Innovative Delivery of Goods and/or Services by a Public Accommodation
- Advocacy - Individual or Organization Working for Improved Service for the Public
- Criteria:
- 1. The nominee must have shown exemplary, pro-active compliance with the ADA design standards; or
- 2. The nominee must have shown exemplary pro-active compliance with the non-discriminatory mandate in the ADA regulations; or
- 3. The nominee must have shown exemplary pro-active delivery of non-discriminatory services; or
- 4. The nominee must have shown exemplary advocacy and pro-active support for the implementation of the ADA regulations
