Seeking Research Consultant For Participatory Action Research

Research Project: Effective Methods of Engaging Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) Americans with Disabilities with the ADA: A Participatory Action Research Approach.

The Institute for Human Centered Design’s New England Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Center is seeking a Participatory Action Research Consultant to help us learn how to engage Americans now left out of the ADA services with ADA services: specifically, people with disabilities in the Black, Indigenous and People-of-Color (BIPoC) communities.

Our research is a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach using survey and interview methods. We will employ grassroots community researchers from six BIPoC majority cities in MA (Boston and Chelsea), RI (Providence and Pawtucket), and in CT (Bridgeport and New Haven). 

The goal of our research is to:

  1. Learn how to engage BIPOC Americans with Disabilities with the ADA;
  2. Develop culturally responsive materials on the ADA for the BIPoC communities, and;
  3. Bring Americans now left out of the rights and assets of the ADA into the assets of the ADA. 

We will start with a pilot study in Boston and Chelsea Massachusetts employing community researchers from the Boston Center for Independent Living. Massachusetts will be the model site to test methods and tools. There will be more time spent up front in MA to develop methods and tools, which will then be applied to RI and CT communities.

Research Questions: We will focus on the design of ADA information, attitudes toward disability, and what sources people trust.

  1. What do you know about the ADA?
  2. What do you think about disability and who that describes?
  3. Where do you go to get information you trust about rights? 

PAR Researcher Minimal Requirements and Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience in Participatory Action Research.
  • Knowledge on disability culture, and familiar with the use of PAR in disability contexts.
  • Seek person with lived experience of disability and person of Color.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and follow-up skills necessary.


Consultant will:

  • Collaborate with community researchers at Boston Independent Living Center in a Pilot Study in two cities in Massachusetts (Boston and Chelsea).
  • In the pilot study, assist community researcher to develop survey and interview questions and oversee field testing to ensure viability for data collection.
  • Assess the survey and interview question designs to ensure they will deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Review PAR-generated survey and interview tools for viable measurable outcomes.
  • Participate in the training of the community researchers to clarify expectations of the PAR project.
  • Work with PAR community researchers to collate and analyze data.
  • Assist in identifying ADA needs of BIPOC Communities.
  • Assist in the development of new ADA materials based on identified need.
  • Once pilot study is finished, will engage directly in the PAR process with two cities in Rhode Island
  • (Providence and Pawtucket), and in CT (Bridgeport and New Haven).
  • Participate in the development of culturally responsive materials on the ADA for the BIPoC communities.
  • Document the research process.
  • Summarize research findings.
  • Assist with writing white paper.


  • Meet with Principal Investigator and Project Director of the New England ADA Center as needed.
  • Meets with ADA National Network as needed to report on research progress (once or twice a year).
  • Participates on ADA National Network Spanish Language Outreach Committee.

Administrative Duties

  • Writes written progress reports monthly.
  • Submits an invoice with number of hours worked and description of work quarterly.
  • Manages all of the data from surveys and interview data.

Position and Expectation

  • Thirty percent (30%) time and varies from week to week.
  • Contract position up to a maximum of 20 months without benefits.
  • Compensation to be negotiated dependent on experience.

Place of Work

Largely remotely with occasional live meetings and travel in southern New England.


Travel will be compensated.
